Thermal Insulation Removal at Glass House Redevelopment, London

Overview

MD Environmental was appointed to undertake the safe removal of thermal insulation materials (TIM) as part of the ongoing redevelopment of the iconic Glass House building in central London.

Working alongside the principal contractor and multiple specialist trades, our team constructed controlled enclosures within riser locations to facilitate the removal of thermal insulation materials while ensuring the highest standards of safety, compliance and environmental control were maintained throughout the project.

Despite the complexity of the redevelopment, works have continued safely and efficiently, supporting the wider refurbishment programme.

The Challenge

Redevelopment projects of this scale present a number of unique challenges that require careful planning and coordination.

The Glass House redevelopment involved working within a partially demolished structure where existing floor levels had already been removed, restricting access to several work areas. Safe access had to be coordinated with specialist scaffolding contractors while maintaining strict segregation between work zones and surrounding construction activities.

Operating in a busy city centre environment also required close communication with the principal contractor to ensure works progressed safely without impacting the overall construction programme.

Licensed Thermal Insulation Removal within a Major Commercial Redevelopment

Our Solution

MD Environmental designed and installed fully controlled enclosures around the riser locations before commencing the removal of thermal insulation materials.

Our experienced operatives followed strict asbestos removal procedures, ensuring all works were carried out safely and in full compliance with current legislation.

Throughout the project our team maintained:

  • Fully controlled asbestos enclosures
  • Negative pressure units and decontamination facilities
  • Continuous air monitoring
  • Strict waste handling procedures
  • Daily coordination with site management and other contractors
  • Ongoing compliance with HSE guidance and site-specific RAMS

Working collaboratively with the scaffolding contractor ensured safe access was available throughout each phase of the project, allowing works to progress efficiently despite the challenging building layout.

The Result

The thermal insulation removal works were completed safely and efficiently, supporting the ongoing redevelopment of The Glass House while maintaining full compliance with current asbestos regulations.

Through careful planning, controlled enclosure systems and close collaboration with the principal contractor and other specialist trades, MD Environmental successfully delivered this phase of the project with minimal disruption to the wider refurbishment programme. The project demonstrates our ability to undertake complex licensed asbestos works within challenging commercial redevelopment environments, maintaining the highest standards of safety, communication and workmanship throughout.
